Human Library of Penang

Step into someone's story. Experience the Human Library of Penang.

Human Library of Penang, welcomes you. We do hope that this event would allow you the opportunity for dialogue that will confront stereotypes and prejudices. We imagine that you have difficult questions; we hope that you will be able to get the answers to.

Some guideline to help get you started:

Start anywhere you want; you don't have to follow a pattern

Don't be shy; find a book and ask some questions.

The books are expecting hard questions; don't be afraid to ask.

You might want to start the conversation by asking one or some of these questions:

  • What's the one thing that you wish everyone knew about your category?

  • What's the thing that everyone assumes about your category (stereotypes)?

When the conversation gets going, just let it flow ....

Please limit your time with any one of the human books to 5-8 minutes, so everyone has a chance to check out as many books as possible. Please complete the survey on the laptops and iPad provided before exiting.

The Rules of the Human
Library of Penang

In a library setting, participants ‘take out’ a self-titled human ‘book’ for up to 5-8 minutes for respectful and courageous conversation about their
experiences of prejudice, bias,
stereotype, stigma or discrimination.

Human Books will be needed to make their experiences open and available while readers are encouraged to ask hard questions and expect candid answers in return.

It is a place to bridge the gap between people both inside and outside the ring of prejudices - be it body image, abuse, mental disorders, sexuality, faith or lifestyle.
